It’s no secret that employees perform at the peak of their abilities when they feel secure, well and cared for.
Employees feel motivated, engaged and empowered when they are happy, find work meaningful and have supportive work environments.
This all sounds great in theory, and could work well BUT how do we do it in reality?
Yes, we do live in volatile, complex, ambiguous environments and businesses have never been tested ever before with the uncertainties brought on by a pandemic of this nature. Work will never be the same again and what is sure is that organizations need to plan for a Post Covid World of work.
The shift to virtual work without proper systems, procedures, practices and the right technology in place is making the transition tough. Individuals are not only grappled with threats to their physical health & wellbeing not to mention the health of their family, friends and colleagues but they are also summoned to adjust psychologically whilst performing to their best to keep up with the demands. Whilst some individuals are aware that they are secure in terms of employment, many question their status of employment given the expected global and local economic crisis.
This no doubt questions one’s sense of security and wellbeing. With much of the uncertainty that looms over, it is no question that leaders too are under tremendous pressure, as they work to keep businesses afloat and plan for continuity.
At the individual level employees are stressed, anxious, frustrated and burnt-out and at the organizational level employers struggle to care for their employees given the circumstances. And there isn’t any doubt that employers too face high levels of stress, anxiety, confusion, frustration and guilt.
On the whole, employers face issues with drops in productivity, lack of engagement, decreased morale and rising conflict as individuals and teams compete for what might seem and be scarce resources. In short, the impact on the bottom line has never been worse!
Nonetheless unprecedented changes call for unprecedented actions!
If organizations are to stay afloat they need to not only have employees that are healthy and well. They also need to have the right employees with the right values that is a good fit with the organization.
